Greetings from the Editorial Team
Welcome back to another edition of our tech industry newsletter, where we decode the key shifts shaping the digital world. Today’s focus zooms in on the tectonic changes AI is causing in the search engine space.
Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, saw its shares tumble over 6% on Wednesday, May 7, following notable remarks from Apple executive Eddy Cue during the ongoing U.S. antitrust proceedings against Google. Cue revealed that Apple is actively considering integrating AI-driven search engines—such as Perplexity AI—into Safari, signaling a potential shift away from Google as the default search provider.
Declining Safari Search Usage Points to Shifting User Trends
Although Google currently retains its default position on Safari, Cue's testimony highlighted a pivotal development: for the first time, Safari recorded a decline in traditional search activity, suggesting a user migration toward AI-powered alternatives. While Apple is not poised to immediately sever its relationship with Google—given the estimated $20 billion annual revenue generated from the existing search partnership—Cue acknowledged that AI-centric search experiences could eventually replace conventional methods.
According to recent analytics from StatCounter, Safari accounts for nearly 24% of the global browser market, making any potential change in its search engine default a critical threat to Google's ad-driven business model.
Big Tech Ramps Up AI Integration
The disclosure underscores mounting pressure on Google from multiple fronts. Apple is expanding its AI capabilities via its Apple Intelligence platform, which already supports ChatGPT as an integrated search feature. In parallel, Microsoft continues to enhance Bing with generative AI tools and has partnered with OpenAI to boost its competitive edge.
Notably, Perplexity AI has reported exponential user growth—crossing over 10 million active users in early 2025—driven by its fast, citation-backed answers and intuitive AI chat experience.

Google’s Countermeasures to Safeguard Search Dominance
To maintain its dominance, Google has begun deploying AI Overviews and experimenting with an AI Mode that mimics ChatGPT functionalities directly within its core search interface. Google is also investing heavily in its Gemini AI platform to counter the rising threat from competitors and retain user engagement across Android and Chrome.
The Road Ahead: Redefining Digital Search
As AI reshapes user behavior and search habits, the tech landscape is witnessing a transformative moment—one that could redefine the balance of power among leading digital giants. The race to lead in AI-driven search is far from over, and the next 12 months may bring even more disruption, innovation, and partnership realignments.
